Biography
Guitar player Kay Sleking plays tango in divergent formations. He performs as a soloist, as an accompanist, in ensembles and also in full orchestral settings.
Especially pure is the sound when Sleking plays solo.
But also in combination with the bandoneon, the violin, the piano, the double bass or a vocalist, his tango sounds beautifully melancholical.
Concert halls and festivals
Since the beginning of the Nineteen's Sleking performs home and abroad with different kinds of musicians in concert halls and theatres.
He has been playing, among others, in the famous Amsterdam Concertgebouw, in the also well-known theatre Kleine Komedie, and in the Rotterdam Doelen. He played at the Ullapool Guitar Festival in Scotland, the Healdsbury Guitar Festival in San Francisco and the Festival de Fénétrange in France.
C0-operations
Sleking performed in the tango formation Marlous Lazal Y Che Tango, together with the famous Argentinean bandoneonist Alfredo Marcucci and bass player Luc van Gestel. Together with bandoneon player Leo Vervelde and bass player Sanne van Delft he performed in tango trio Otros Tiempos.
In 2005 Sleking took the initiative in forming the guitar trio Guitarras Tango, which focuses on traditional Tango music. Guitarras Tango performs home and abroad. Besides the above mentioned, Sleking also plays in divergent kinds of tango formations.
For tango dance party's, concerts, or other festivities and party's, Sleking plays with well-known tango musicians ‘a la parilla' (which means improvised).
Albums
In 2006 his solo album Guitarra Y Tango came out, with traditional tango's in new arrangements. In that same year Sleking and bandoneonist Victor Hugo Villena joined forces and in April this year their first CD will come out.
Teaching
Sleking is a teacher at the department of Argentinean Tango at the Rotterdam Conservatory, where he also directs the guitar ensemble Guitarras Portenas . With this ensemble, and the orquestra tipica Otra he played in 2006 at the Tango Festival in Buenos Aires.
Sleking arranges for guitar on different levels, he gives private and groups lessons tango guitar, workshops tango guitar and tango ensembles and gives presentations on the history of tango.
Education
Kay Sleking studied classical guitar at the Rotterdam, Conservatory.
During his second fase study, he specialised in Argentinean Tango. For this purpose he got lessons from the Argentinean guitarist, composer and arranger Coco Nelegatti, in Berlin. In 2000 he finished his studies, was then awarded with the ESSO award for talented young musicians and became a teacher at the department of Argentinean Tango at the Rotterdam Conservatory.
